Our Team

Principal Investigator

I'm a biologist working in ancient DNA and population genetics. My main aim is to understand historical migration processes by the analysis of human remains and their comparison with modern populations. My expertise is focused on the paleogenomic analysis of ancient human remains. Some of my current projects deal with the study of the human migrations related to the colonization of the Canary Islands and the transoceanic slave trade in Mauritius. When not in the lab, I love reading, going for walks and rewatching 80s movies.

Postdoctoral Researcher

With a degree in History and a Masters Degree in Physical and Forensic Anthropology, I specialized in ancient DNA during my Ph.D. I've mostly worked in the studying of Canarian aboriginal populations. I enjoy being part of two worlds that seem very distant, being able to understand both languages and make my contribution to achieve real interdisciplinarity. When I'm not working I love reading, near my cat and a cup of tea, and dancing.

Predoctoral Researcher

Biology graduate and currently an MSc student. In the last two years I’ve been working in the team I’ve been trying to understand history accessing ancient microbes' DNA. This field allows me to mix some of my passions: genetics, bioinformatics and history.

Undergrad Student

Hi! my name's Clara Diaz Pérez and I'm 21 years old. I'm a biology student here in the University of La Laguna. I have entered the team this year to do my final degree research and I'm going to work with domestic animals and plants. Apart from genetics I like other things like theater, cats or going snorkeling

Exchange Student

I am Milena Mirow, I am 22 years old and I am a student of the Biology degree of the Freie Universität Berlin. I am doing an internship before graduating in the paleogenetic research group.

Our Collaborators

Within the multidisciplinary vocation of our laboratory, we collaborate with professionals from different disciplines whose contributions enrich all our projects.

History Graduate on the University of La Laguna and Msc in Archaeology on the University of Granada. I'm Currently doing my Phd Thesis about stable isotope analyses on archaeological human bone remains of the aborigine populations of the Canary Islands to better understand dietary and daily life patterns in the past.

Degree in History (ULL) and with a Master in Physical and Forensic Anthropology (UGR), over the last few years I have been specializing in the analysis of bone markers of physical activity, which are the traces that daily physical work leaves in our bones, and in whose appearance there is also an important genetic factor. Lately I have focused my archaeological research in the aboriginal period of the Canary Islands, as well as in the beginnings of the ancient states of Egypt and Nubia. However, what I enjoy most about my work is to be able to apply it to any geographical and chronological context so that I can better approximate the day-to-day life of the societies of the past and the present.

I am a doctor in Biology from the University of La Laguna, where I am currently hired as a Ramón y Cajal researcher. I lead the Genomics and Health research group, focused on the search for genetic markers related to susceptibility, response to treatment, and severity of asthma and other allergic and respiratory diseases. We also study the differences presented by these genetic markers between different populations.

I am a doctor in Biology and I work in the ‘Genomics and Health’ group, surrounded by an unbeatable environment in the ULL Genetics Area. My main line of research focuses on the study of allergic diseases and their relationship with changes in the microbiome, using high performance genetic analysis tools such as massive DNA sequencing. Outside the laboratory, I dedicate my time to my family, to do some sport and to enjoy Canarian gastronomy, mountains and beaches.
